Introduction
When studying Strength of materials the student will be confrontated with Sign Conventions… often confusing… which I experienced when studying at the Technical University in Delft, the Netherlands. But that’s not necessary because one can study strength of materials without Sign Conventions! That’s what I found when teaching strength of materials at a technical college, No Sign Conventions and all became clear and easy to understand.

How to calculate and draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams, explained in detail to get surprised to see how easy ik can be.
- Displacement/deformation method without Sign Conventions. (Part 1)
This method is explained step by step in detail, and no Sign Convention agreements, but ‘assumptions’ instead. With this method programs to calculate all kinds of constructions can be written, to draw shear force and bending moment diagrams, normal force diagrams and deformation lines/curves of member/beams as well.
- Plane stresses and Mohr’s stress circle without Sign Conventions.
Drawing Mohr’s stress circle becomes easy when omitting the usual Sign Conventions for Normal and Shear stresses. Added is computer code written with Visual Basic 6.0.
